It all started when...

David was born in Teddington, Middlesex in 1953. Inspired by the beautiful tone and the challenge, David started playing the clarinet at the age of 12. He was soon involved in the music-making in school followed swiftly by entry into the county youth orchestra. He then went on to study the clarinet at Trinity College of Music with John Denman where he also studied conducting with Bernard Keefe. During his time at college he was Principal Clarinet in the chamber orchestra as well as in the Symphony Orchestra.

In 1975 he was awarded a Fellowship of Trinity College. Whilst at college he helped to found the Chiltern Wind Quintet which later performed many recitals around Britain and Europe, winning the Masie Lewis young artists award and performing at the Wigmore Hall on several occasions to great critical acclaim. David then moved into teaching the clarinet spending eight years at Charterhouse before settling down in Carshalton where he now lives with his family. He now spends as much time conducting as performing. He has been conducting CSB since 1980. He is the Musical Director of the Sutton Young Musicians Orchestra as well as the Croydon Symphonic Band and also teaches the Clarinet and Saxophone locally at Croydon High, Wallington High Schools and Wilsons School.
